The Social Standards of Beauty - is it our own fault?

January 17, 2020
February 8, 2024

Always bear in mind that the point is NOT to change oneself but to ENHANCE one's appearance such that the end result in the mirror is still you.

Table of Contents

We are influenced by what affects our senses and more often than not, the media play a massive role in shaping that influence. However, being human, we tend to develop unrealistic expectations, and this is none truer than when it comes to looking good.

When we fail in the pursuit of such expectations, we tend to lay the blame on others – in this case, the media. When it comes to aesthetic treatments, always bear in mind that the point is NOT to change oneself but to ENHANCE one's appearance such that the end result in the mirror is still you.

In today's Instagram dominated world, the "standard of beauty" is unrealistically defined by how deft one is in using the accompanying photo editing tools or filters. As ludicrous as it sounds, people (millennials in particular) are walking into an aesthetic clinic wanting to leave like how they look on these social networking sites, apps and tools - to basically look like a photo filter version and nothing like themselves.

"Instagram had a filter that made your face look like plastic surgery…"
- Levi Jed Murphy

In the video above is Levi Jed Murphy, a 23-year old who regularly gets fillers done and other procedures such as rhinoplasty and canthoplasty to help him achieve his ideal "instagram appearance".

He isn't alone.

True Beauty

We all want to feel good about ourselves and looking good does help in that regards. Nonetheless, we should not neglect or overlook our overall well-being in our aesthetic pursuit. A photo filter, without a doubt, does suggest to a certain extent, the realms of that possibility but don't let that daydream confuse or influence the reality of what's truly possible.

"… skin does have texture and different tones to it. It looks weird and ridiculous when it's completely flawless, so it's strange that people are setting that as the ideal."
- Sophie Harris-Taylor, Photographer

Ideally, the goal should be to enhance one's appearance. Subtle changes here and there goes a long way in improving one's look, but not to the extent of being unrecognisable. There are many horror stories of procedures gone wrong and chances are, they are the result of unrealistic goals.

You don't have to resort to aesthetic procedures as a first option.

Start from within first.

Begin with changes to your lifestyle – in terms of dietary habits and whatnots. Stress is a silent killer in more ways than one, so learn to manage and keep it in check. Stay positive and adopt physical exercise routines like yoga, a brisk walk and even boxing classes, to name a few. Complement them with meditations, deep breathing exercises and the like. You'll be surprised at how all these good habits come together and how they not only rejuvenate your well-being but also your appearance.

If, after some time, you think you would still need some help in regards to your appearance, then seek it from qualified and reputable doctors.

Skin: The Aesthetic Solution

While genetics and environmental factors affect our appearance, it does not mean that achieving radiant skin is impossible. Pico Fractional Laser, a signature treatment of Amaris B. Clinic, can eradicate all kinds of skin concerns. Coupled with our doctor's designed SkinSOS! Botanical Facial, this combination treatment is what sets us apart from other laser treatment providers in the field.

Pico Fractional Laser is an FDA-approved 450-picosecond Nd: YAG based laser that can generate faster pulses than nanosecond pulse lasers - previously the common standard. This capability enables Pico Fractional Laser to complete treatment in less time and with better efficacy. It is also suitable for Asian or darker skin, and can treat a wider variety of skin concerns such as dull skin, acne and acne scars, rosacea, pigmentation, sun damage and melasma.

Face: Enhance, Not Change

Dermal fillers and injectable neurotoxins for jaw slimming can enhance your looks, but it is crucial that you seek such treatments from a qualified and experienced medical aesthetics doctor who has a good artistic sense!

4D Fluid Facelift is a bespoke treatment specially designed by our Medical Director, Dr. Ivan Puah. This treatment subtly restores the natural and curved contours of the face. It can also be used to lift facial features such as the cheeks, depending on the aesthetic harmony of the face.

Speaking of aesthetics and facial harmony, did you know that once you change the shape of your nose, your whole face changes too?

Nose lift is one of the more sought-after treatments when it comes to achieving a more natural appearance. The HIKO Nose Thread Lift is a popular treatment for many, due to its efficacy. Non-surgical Rhinoplasty uses absorbable PDO thread to achieve a higher, straighter and sharper but most importantly, natural looking nose bridge. It can also improve the nose tip's definition without the need for surgery. These threads are placed carefully in the nose to heighten the nose bridge and nose tip.

Body: When strict diet & regular workout won't move bulge

Dr Ivan Puah has seen clients who have tried to lose weight and stubborn body fat with exercise and dieting but with less than ideal results. He believes that with the right weight management plan that is designed by a doctor, combined with patented compression and vacuum technology, and surgical intervention, patients will be able to reduce the numbers on the scale, sculpt the body and improve body fat percentage.

Reveal your true beauty. Don’t filter it.
