Did you know that a double chin may be caused by factors apart from weight gain? The skin loses its natural elasticity with age, causing the skin right below the neck to droop. Other times, it can be genetic and have nothing to do with your weight, fitness level or diet. If your closely related family members have a double chin, you are more likely to develop one. Another big culprit of double chins? Age.
While plenty of gimmicks on the market claim to tone up your chin, there's little evidence that non-surgical means like double chin reduction fat freezing treatment or fat dissolving injections can effectively and permanently remove fat on double chins.
Read on to find out why non-surgical treatments cannot successfully get rid of a double chin and what type of surgery is scientifically proven to get rid of a double chin, aka neck fat, successfully and permanently.
Non-surgical double chin treatments
Cryolipolysis
Cryolipolysis is said to result in a 20% to 25% reduction of fat in the treated area. However, it has limitations due to the size of the fat-freezing applicator and an irreversible side effect called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia. This condition causes the fat in the treated area to harden, resembling butter, and takes on the shape of the cryolipolysis applicator head.
Fat dissolving injections
Fat-dissolving injections, or Mesolipo injections, are used in some countries to dissolve submental fat. Banned in Brazil and Singapore, its side effects include nausea, skin infections and abnormal heartbeat, irregular skin contours and nerve damage.
HIFU double chin
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound waves to emit heat and destroy fat cells beneath the skin's surface. According to a study, one of the most common side effects of HIFU is blotchy skin. Multiple sessions are required, spread across 3 to 6 months. Improvements are also highly variable in individuals, with some not seeing any changes.
Double chin removal with facial liposuction with MDC-Sculpt®️ Lipo technique
According to Dr Puah, the only real fix is to reduce and remove excess fat with liposuction, the clinically proven method to treat this problematic area effectively.
Facial liposuction involves removing fat from the targeted areas of the face such as cheek, jowls and chin.
Dr Puah developed his proprietary surgical approach, the MDC-Sculpt®️ Lipo technique, after years of facial and body sculpting experience. This refined technique goes beyond fat reduction. It also subtly tightens and lifts saggy skin while improving overall facial contour.
First, Dr Puah will mark the areas and place the patient under twilight sedation (not general anaesthesia). Then, he'll make small incisions strategically to infiltrate the anaesthetic solution into the treated areas. Next, using his proprietary surgical approach, the MDC-Sculpt®️ Lipo Sculpt technique, he carefully removes fat and creates a sculpted facial profile.
Right after the procedure, you'll have to wear a facial compression garment; compressing the treated area helps to speed up tissue recovery. With this surgical technique, you can expect minimal disruption to your daily activities post-facial liposuction. Pain is minimal, and common side effects such as bruising (if any) tend to resolve in a week or two.
Fat removed via liposuction is gone for good. Also, removing your double chin via liposuction can make you appear slimmed down or aged backwards!
FAQ on double chin from facial liposuction
Is facial liposuction for everyone?
Facial liposuction suits those with a visible double chin, round face or short chin. Both men and women can undergo the procedure as long as they're in good health. However, those with excessive loose skin around their face and neck may not be suitable for this procedure.
When performed by an experienced liposuction doctor, the facial liposuction is safe and effective. This procedure can now be performed under local anaesthesia without hospitalisation.
Will I regain the fat?
If you have significant weight gain after the procedure, you may look less sharp or sculpted, but you're unlikely to develop a double chin again.
Why is facial liposuction better than non-invasive treatments?
Generally, the results from non-surgical treatments are unpredictable. This inevitably leads to dissatisfied patients. On top of that, many of these treatments require multiple sessions for visible results – just think about the total cost involved! Facial liposuction, when performed by skilled and experienced liposuction doctors, yields significant, visible and long-term fat removal results.
Can facial liposuction be combined with other procedures?
Yes! Chin and facial liposuction can be performed with procedures like Ultherapy (for an enhanced skin-lifting effect), Injectable neurotoxins and dermal fillers for facial enhancement and pico fractional laser for facial rejuvenation.
