Did you know that a double chin may be caused by factors apart from weight gain? The skin loses its natural elasticity with age, causing the skin right below the neck to droop. Other times, it can be genetic and have nothing to do with your weight, fitness level or diet. If your closely related family members have a double chin, you are more likely to develop one. Another big culprit of double chins? Age.
While plenty of gimmicks on the market claim to tone up your chin, there's little evidence that non-surgical means like double chin reduction fat freezing treatment or fat dissolving injections can effectively and permanently remove fat on double chins.

Non-surgical double chin treatments
Cryolipolysis
Cryolipolysis is said to result in a 20% to 25% reduction of fat in the treated area. However, it has limitations due to the size of the fat-freezing applicator and an irreversible side effect called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia. This condition causes the fat in the treated area to harden, resembling butter, and takes on the shape of the cryolipolysis applicator head.
Fat dissolving injections
Fat-dissolving injections, or Mesolipo injections, are used in some countries to dissolve submental fat. Banned in Brazil and Singapore, its side effects include nausea, skin infections and abnormal heartbeat, irregular skin contours and nerve damage.
HIFU double chin
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound waves to emit heat and destroy fat cells beneath the skin's surface. According to a study, one of the most common side effects of HIFU is blotchy skin. Multiple sessions are required, spread across 3 to 6 months. Improvements are also highly variable in individuals, with some not seeing any changes.

Is facial liposuction for everyone?
Facial liposuction suits those with a visible double chin, round face or short chin. Both men and women can undergo the procedure as long as they're in good health. However, those with excessive loose skin around their face and neck may not be suitable for this procedure.
When performed by an experienced liposuction doctor, the facial liposuction is safe and effective. This procedure can now be performed under local anaesthesia without hospitalisation.
Will I regain the fat?
If you have significant weight gain after the procedure, you may look less sharp or sculpted, but you're unlikely to develop a double chin again.
