An Open Letter To Stay At Home Moms

March 27, 2018

All the time for everyone but not a minute to spare for yourself. Dear stay-at-home mums, before you take care of others, take good care of yourself first.

Dear Stay At Home Moms,

You start your day at 5am daily to prepare breakfast for the kids and prepare them for school. After housework and the laundry, it is time to prepare for lunch before school ends. Time flies by so fast, and it is time to pick the kids up and attend to them until bedtime. All the time for everyone but not a minute to spare for yourself.

When you finally have some time one day, you look hard in the mirror and wonder, "Where did all those years go?" Fat gained, and that once upon-a-time hourglass is now bulging with love handles.

You begin to wonder why, as you only cook the healthiest meal for yourself and the family and doing housework counts as a form of exercise, right?

Doing housework can burn calories

128 calories per hour while ironing or washing dishes

150 calories per hour while cooking or putting away groceries

165 calories per hour doing general housework

180 calories per hour loading or unloading a car

But stubborn fat pockets are obstinate for a reason. Most women carry weight and fat around the hips, butt and thighs. Genetics play a significant role in fat accumulation, especially when you are above 30 years old.

Fat loss is not as easy as ABC

Dr Ivan Puah, Medical Director of Amaris B. Clinic and Chairman of the Lipo Peer Review Committee Singapore has seen patients with different body types and shapes, with stubborn fat issues, that refused to budge despite strict dieting or exercise.

Stubborn fat is as persistent as a 2 year-old’s tantrum

Dr Ivan Puah recommends one of the clinic's signature treatments, Vaser Liposuction, to address stubborn areas.

It is a fat removal procedure that harnesses ultrasound technology and is carried out under local anaesthesia. During the surgery, the patient will be lightly sedated and cared for by the anesthesiologist while Dr Puah makes small incisions in the treatment area. A specially prepared numbing solution infiltrates the targeted area via the small incisions.

An ultrasonic probe is then inserted into the skin's fatty tissue layer to emulsify the fat before extraction via suction. The ultrasonic energy causes the fat cells to transform from "a brick of butter" to "melted butter" for a smooth removal. Vaser liposuction can also induce skin tightening by stimulating collagen fibre contraction.

Vaser Liposuction is a specialised form of liposuction, and only Vaser-certified physicians are allowed to carry out the procedure. Dr Ivan Puah received his fundamental and advanced Vaser Lipo training in the United States of America and Argentina. He was one of the first few doctors in Singapore to perform the procedure when it arrived in 2008.

With more than 15 years of liposuction experience, he has treated many mummies who are bothered with disproportionate body shapes and excess fat on body areas, such as:

  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Abdomen, waist and excess bra strap fat
  • Enlarged male chest
  • Upper arms, armpits, upper back and dorsocervical fat pad (also known as buffalo hump)
  • Face including sagging jowls, double chin and neck fat
  • Knees, calves and ankles

Mummies who are bothered with post-breast feeding issues such as saggy breasts and loss of volume will be heartened to know that fat extracted via Vaser liposuction can be grafted or transplanted to the breasts. This helps to increase breast size and improve skin texture and shape. It also provides subtle and natural lifting!

The cost of Vaser Liposuction in Singapore differs and is not one-size-fits-all. It varies based on multiple factors, such as the areas treated, fat density in those targeted areas, surgical time, type of anaesthesia, doctor's experience and skillset and the intricacy of each case.

Being a stay-at-home mum is a full-time job. You turn a house into a home through your hard work and sacrifices. For that and more, we take our hats off to you.

But before you take care of others, dear Stay At Home Moms, take good care of yourself first. To schedule an appointment, give us a call today.

Sincerely,

Us
