As a certified Vaser Liposuction physician who has received training and guidance from Dr John Millard and Dr Alfredo Hoyos, the developers of Vaser Liposuction, Dr Ivan Puah has witnessed the transformative effects of this procedure that it has on his patients for close to two decades of his liposuction career.
Embarking on a lifelong journey to combat fat is a relatable experience for many. Whether to feel more confident in clothing, improve fitness levels, or boost self-esteem, the struggle against stubborn fat goes beyond mere vanity... The battle is real!
Many of us relentlessly diet, work out, and buy expensive creams that claim to burn fat, often leaving us disappointed with the results. So, is there a permanent and effective solution to fight stubborn body fat? This is where Vaser Liposuction steps in.
What is Vaser Liposuction?
Vaser Liposuction, an advanced body contouring technique, was introduced to Singapore by Dr Ivan Puah, Medical Director of Amaris B. Clinic, and two other doctors.
Unlike traditional lipo, Vaser Lipo uses patented ultrasound wave energy to break down fat through duo action — acoustic and mechanical. It is for those who would like to remove fat from body parts that are resistant to dieting and exercise and correct disproportionate body shape.
Since its first launch in 2008, Vaser Lipo has been an established and well-loved body contouring procedure in Singapore and worldwide. It can remove fat from almost all body parts, including arms, belly, waist, thighs, hips, back, knees, and even calves.
Dr Ivan Puah, an MOH-accredited liposuction doctor and Chairman of the Lipo Peer Review committee, guides you through the maze of fat, fat loss, and Vaser liposuction! Read on.
10 Things I Tell My Patients About Fat and Fat Reduction with Vaser Liposuction
1. It Is Not Possible to Target Fat Loss in Specific Areas of the Body With Diet and Exercise
Fat is stored in cells as triglycerides, serving as an energy source. Most dietary fats consumed are triglycerides stored in fat cells, distributed throughout the body as subcutaneous and visceral fat. These reserves act as an energy reservoir during physical activity or fasting.
Despite spot reduction claims, when the body needs energy, it metabolises fat from fat tissue across the entire body, not just targeted areas. Genetics, gender, age, and hormones influence fat mobilisation, making it impossible to selectively target specific areas through exercise alone.
2. You Can Lose Stubborn Fat Without Losing Muscle Through Body Contouring Surgery
With Vaser liposuction, fat reduction can be achieved on a specific body part without compromising muscle mass.
This lipo technique selectively targets and removes only fat cells while preserving surrounding tissues, including muscles. It is an effective option for individuals looking to refine their body contours and achieve a more balanced, toned appearance.
3. Advantage of Vaser Liposuction vs Non-surgical Solutions
Non-surgical solutions such as cryolipolysis, laser therapy, biomagnetic technology, and radiofrequency energy are available to reduce localised fat deposits.
The results from non-surgical treatments may vary based on factors such as an individual's body composition and response to the treatment and the number of sessions required over a period of time.
Vaser Liposuction is a one-time fat removal procedure offering personalised body shaping with a more defined and lasting outcome.
4. Fat Removal Surgery Such As Liposuction Can Be Unsafe
While there are some horror stories of botched cosmetic surgeries on the internet, it is comforting to know that Singapore has one the strictest liposuction regulations in the world as the Ministry of Health (MOH) prioritises patient safety.
Patients with underlying medical conditions or who did not meet the BMI criteria and are pregnant are not allowed to go through liposuction.
In the past, traditional lipo methods required patients to be hospitalised and the procedure to be carried out under general anaesthesia.
Now, lipo can be done as a Day Procedure (whereby a patient can be discharged home on the same day) under local anaesthesia, thereby minimising the risks commonly associated with general anaesthesia.
5. Vaser Liposuction Isn’t As Scary and Painful As It Sounds
Some videos circulating on the internet feature doctors "violently jabbing" the cannulas through and using big suction tubings, projecting an invasive and scary image.
But the truth is, liposuction techniques have evolved over the years. Vaser liposuction, for example, uses ultrasound wave energy to fragment fat tissues prior to removal while keeping other important connective tissues, such as nerves and blood vessels, intact.
Post Vaser Lipo, there is minimal pain, and most patients would describe the discomfort as akin to overworking out. Pain, if any, is usually manageable with paracetamol.
There is generally minimal bruising and downtime for patients. Recovery is fast, with little disruption to daily activities.
6. Vaser Liposuction Cannot Help With Weight Loss
Vaser liposuction is an effective fat removal and body sculpting procedure, but it cannot be used and is not meant to help with weight loss.
Patients who aim to lose a few kilograms and not remove fat from specific body areas are more suitable for weight management programs.
7. Vaser Liposuction Tightens Skin
Depending on an individual's conditions and skin laxity, those with mild to moderate loose skin can see improvement in their skin firmness.
As fat is removed during Vaser lipo, a "space" is created for the skin to tighten. This will allow the skin to naturally retract and conform to the body's contours during the tissue healing process.
8. Vaser Liposuction Can Correct Previous Lipo Deformities
If you've undergone liposuction in the past and are unhappy with the results, such as unevenness, rippling, left-over bulges or indentations, Vaser Lipo is ideal for revising these deformities.
Under the hands of a skilled lipo doctor, it can improve pre-existing conditions, correct, and smooth out irregularities for a more aesthetically pleasing and balanced contour.
9. Fat Removed with Vaser Lipo Can Be Reused
Vaser liposuction removes fat and delivers it in a sterile and viable form, ready for re-injection into areas needing volume enhancement, such as the face, buttocks, and breasts.
Unlike traditional liposuction methods, Vaser emulsifies the fat and removes it in small clumps, making it smoother and more accessible to reinject.
This process, known as fat transfer or fat grafting, can rejuvenate aged hands, fill facial wrinkles, enhance buttocks curves, and enlarge breasts, providing natural-looking and lasting results.
10. Liposuction Results Won’t Be the Same With Every Doctor
Liposuction involves more than just removing fat; the outcomes greatly depend on the experience, precision, and surgical skills of the doctor.
I have dedicated almost two decades of my medical career to pursuing the art of body contouring and have developed two proprietary body contouring techniques over the years.
I can't emphasise enough the importance of meticulousness and attention to detail that the liposuction doctor must have in order to achieve optimal results.
Each liposuction case is a unique opportunity for transformation. Through a personalised approach, we focus on enhancing your natural contours while removing excess fat. When done right, a lipo procedure enhances your silhouette and boosts your self-confidence.
