A botched Hi-Def Liposuction can impact the patient's well-being & mental health. Here are the common complications to look out for & what to do about it.

Vaser Liposuction has become the preferred liposuction technique over traditional liposuction. One of the primary reasons for this is that Vaser Lipo is powerful yet gentle at the same time. It uses ultrasound wave energy to liquefy fat tissues in the treated area without damaging the surrounding important connective tissues while stimulating collagen from within to encourage skin retraction.
This means that bruising, pain and downtime is lesser for patients. Having a shorter recovery time allows patients to resume their daily activities and lifestyle quickly, while the results continue to show over a period of time ~ yay!
However, it is important to remember that postoperative care is a two-way relationship. You must follow all of your doctor's post-op instructions for the optimal outcome.
Here’s what to expect days, weeks and months after surgery after a Vaser Liposuction surgery.
Immediately after Vaser Lipo surgery
Fat is removed instantly during the surgery hence the patient can expect a new and improved contour before the tissue swelling sets. Bruising and some level of discomfort are expected. However, these, including post-lipo tissue swelling, will gradually dissipate and improve over the next few weeks.
No smoking and alcohol
It is highly recommended that you avoid drinking and smoking for at least one week before and after any surgery. Smoking disrupts a patient’s immune system and hinders the healing process, therefore increasing the likelihood of infection at the surgical site.
Drinking alcohol dilates the blood vessels, leading to increased swelling in the body. Since tissue swelling is expected after the liposuction, alcohol consumption may cause further swelling and interfere with the healing process.
Compression garments all day every day
Let’s be honest: Wearing compression garments for an extended period of time can be uncomfortable and warm, especially in Singapore's humid weather. However, it is important to be patient and consistent with wearing them to reap the rewards! Compression garments help retract the skin, reduce swelling and promote healing.
Fuel your recovery with nutritious food post liposuction
Following any surgery, including liposuction, your diet will play a crucial role in the healing process. It is recommended that the patient consume a diet rich in protein, vitamins and minerals, to promote speedy recovery.

Days after Vaser lipo surgery (1 - 7 days)
Resuming daily activities
Most patients can typically return to work after 2 to 3 days and resume normal activities (excluding heavy lifting, gym work and water activities). It's crucial to give your body ample time to heal. Stitches, if any, will be removed, on Day 7 post-op.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage (MLD Massage)
Careful adherence to the lipo doctor’s instructions, including regular follow-up appointments is crucial post surgery. Patients are recommended to incorporate manual lymphatic drainage massage as part of their recovery regimen, ideally within the initial days following surgery. MLD massage helps to mitigate the accumulation of fluid and the development of scar tissue, aiding in a smoother recovery process.
Be active
Start with light activities like walking around the house, sweeping the floor, or doing the dishes. These activities help to promote healthy blood circulation, and speed up healing.
Weeks after Vaser lipo surgery (1 - 4 weeks)
Swelling subsides
Swelling usually goes down within 2 weeks. The skin will continue to tighten and retract over the next 12 weeks.
Doctor’s clearance to return to gym and water activities
Ideally after 6 weeks post Vaser Lipo surgery, your lipo doctor will advise you on the appropriate activities to resume according to your recovery progress.
Liposuction scars
When undergoing any surgical procedure, including liposuction, the formation of scars is inevitable. But scar visibility can be minimised through careful techniques and diligent care post-lipo.
A skilled lipo doctor strategically places incisions in areas that are less noticeable, thereby reducing the risk of visible scarring. The size and location of incisions play important roles in determining the appearance of scars.
Additionally, individual factors such as age and genetics can influence the healing process. Younger patients and those with favourable genetic traits will experience faster healing and less noticeable scars.
Proper post-surgical care, including adherence to wound care instructions and lifestyle adjustments are vital for scar prevention. Patients should expect some temporary discolouration of scars during the initial stage of healing, and these will tend to fade over time.
Patients can do their part by protecting scars from exposure as excessive sun exposure and neglecting proper wound care can result in complications such as hyperpigmentation.

Months after Vaser lipo surgery (1 - 6 months)
Results are visible immediately after fat is removed. However, as tissue swelling sets in following the procedure, you will appreciate the optimal results in 3 to 6 months. Patience is the key to allow the body to heal gradually. Patients with mild to moderate skin laxity will not only see a reduction of fat but also an improvement in skin tightening.
Vaser Liposuction offers long-lasting results. By maintaining a disciplined lifestyle and following a balanced diet and frequent exercise routine, you can ensure that the results of Vaser Lipo last a lifetime!
