Singaporeans are no longer shy about their cosmetic surgery - the reason may surprise you!

Many assume those seeking cosmetic surgery are vain but this is untrue. Learn why Singaporeans are embracing their transformations. The reason may surprise you!

Why Singaporeans not shy admitting they got cosmetic surgery

According to a survey by Statista, 9% of Singapore's population, which stood at 5.92 million as of October 2024, have already undergone at least one cosmetic procedure, and nearly half of the population is considering such treatments.

Another study also reported a 10% increase in new patients seeking cosmetic procedures, indicating a growing demand.

Singapore is in the Top 20 countries with the highest cosmetic surgery rates

A 2021 ISAPS data shows Singapore having one of the highest rates of cosmetic surgery per 1,000 people. The actual number could be significantly higher since the study only highlighted aesthetic plastic surgeons and did not include non-surgeon aesthetic practitioners.

Gone are the days of plastic shaming. Why Singaporeans are no longer shy about telling people they got cosmetic surgery

Many people hold the misconception that individuals who seek cosmetic surgery or medical aesthetic enhancement are creatures of vanity, display narcissistic traits or have pathologic self-image issues. That cannot be further from the truth.

Unknown to many, cosmetic surgery can be an excellent tool for restoring confidence, developing a positive self-image, and addressing medical conditions that cause physical discomfort.

For instance, procedures like gynecomastia surgery or accessory breast removal surgery can provide relief for individuals struggling with pain and discomfort to improve their quality of life.

“We should educate the public that cosmetic procedures are as safe as normal medicine.”

- Craddock, N., Spotswood, F., Rumsey, N., & Diedrichs, P. C. (2022)

Some individuals may also find that traditional solutions like diet and exercise are inefficient in addressing specific problem areas that arise from events like pregnancy or weight gain.

Cosmetic surgery has the potential to significantly boost an individual's confidence, leading to positive impacts across various aspects of life. Enhanced self-esteem resulting from cosmetic procedures can profoundly influence personal relationships and propel their careers, promoting a more positive self-image, improved interactions with others, and generally a more positive outlook in life.

Going for cosmetic surgery is a sign of status, according to a study

A study titled Cosmetic Surgeries As Conspicuous Consumption: Disclosing Information About Having Undergone Cosmetic Surgery Signals Social Status reveals that “although surgeons and laypeople generally fail to recognise cosmetic surgery benefits beyond mere aesthetics, men and women bragging about cosmetic surgeries are deemed as higher in status” [2].

The idea of cosmetic surgery being an exclusive, high-end commodity stemmed from the fact that cosmetic enhancements are costly, thus creating the impression of a higher social status for those who undergo them, regardless of gender. Therefore, individuals may opt for cosmetic enhancements not just for personal reasons, but also to signal their elevated status, especially when it comes to attracting a life partner.

The research concludes that "consumers may "go under the knife" to signal social status."

What to say if someone asks if you had cosmetic surgery, and they want to do the same

Singaporeans are no longer shy about their cosmetic surgery - the reason may surprise you!

It's quite common for someone to say, "Wow, you look different today. What did you do?" or "There's something different about you today!" Most often, the changes would not be drastic if it was a good cosmetic procedure or medical aesthetics enhancement. You'll simply look like the best version of yourself. What was noticeable was the vibe you exude and the way you carry yourself after getting a confidence jolt post-surgery!

However, if someone is asking out of ill intentions or hostility, remember, it is not your problem that someone is envious of the transformation or progression you dare make for yourself!

If someone is seeking recommendations and you're open to discussing your procedure, feel free to share.

However, it's essential to remember that everyone's diagnosis, body, face, and skin are unique, so the exact procedure, cost, and results can vary.

Encourage them to ask any questions they may have by scheduling a private one-on-one consultation with Dr Ivan Puah at 140 Arab Street. They can start by sending us a WhatsApp message today!
