What is Laserlipolysis (Laser Liposuction) And How It Works

Laserlipolysis (laser liposuction) is fast gaining popularity as it targets small fat deposits in specific areas. Find out how it works and its benefits.

What is Laserlipolysis (Laser Liposuction) And How It Works

Table of Contents

Laserlipolysis, also known as laser liposuction, is a procedure that uses laser energy to break down fat cells into liquefied fat. This liquefied fat is then removed through suction. Besides melting fat, laser energy also stimulates collagen production through tissue coagulation and helps to break the septa bands that cause fat accumulation and skin dimpling.

Read on to find out more on how it works and its benefits.

Two types of laserlipolysis

Non-Invasive Laserlipolysis

Therapists, not doctors, perform non-invasive laser lipolysis treatments. They are conducted in a non-medical setting, such as spas and beauty salons. An applicator is used to reduce fat pockets in the targeted body area. Non-invasive laser lipolysis requires multiple sessions and the results will depend on how the patient responds to the treatment. Additionally, it is not able to shape and sculpt the body, the main function is to reduce fat to a certain degree.

Minimally-Invasive Laserlipolysis (Laser Liposuction)

Minimally-invasive laserlipolysis, or laser liposuction, can only be performed in Singapore by an accredited MOH liposuction doctor in an operating theatre.

As laser lipolysis comes in non-invasive and minimally invasive forms, it's crucial to inquire about the services provided by your service provider, as the results can be significantly different. Understanding these differences will help you make the best decision for your body.

Differences between Non-Invasive Laserlipolysis and Minimally-Invasive Laserlipolysis (Laser Liposuction)

Non-Invasive Laserlipolysis Minimally-Invasive Laserlipolysis (Laser Liposuction)
What is it Non-surgical laser lipolysis Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL)
How it works A handheld device that uses lasers to melt fat cells under the skin without harming the outer layers. The doctor will numb the treatment site, use a laser to break down fat cells beneath your skin and utilise the cannula to suck out the liquified fat.
Fat reduction Estimated to melt 24% of fat cells in the targeted area. Completely and permanently removes the fat cells in the targeted area.
Results Targeted fat reduction only. Not able to shape the body. Results are typically visible about 6 weeks after first treatment. Optimal results from a single session appearing at 12 weeks. Immediate. Fat is liquefied and removed via suction. However, due to tissue swelling setting in post surgery, the final contouring results will be optimised within 3 to 6 months.
Candidates Candidates should be at or near their ideal body weight and in a healthy BMI range. Candidates should be at or near their ideal body weight and in a healthy BMI range.

How does laserlipolysis (laser liposuction) work?

This video is only for educational purposes

Laserlipolysis (Laser Liposuction) is performed under local anaesthesia at an accredited day surgery centre. To ensure comfort throughout the procedure, the patient is given twilight sedation, not general anaesthesia and will be taken care of by an experienced anaesthesiologist.

Targeted body areas

The treatment effectively and safely targets small areas of fat deposits on the face, chin, neck, upper and lower abdomen, waist, armpits, upper back, inner thighs, outer hips, upper arms, knees, and calves.

Fat removal procedure

Dr Ivan Puah, a Singapore MOH-accredited liposuction doctor with decades of experience in body sculpting and fat removal surgeries, will make small incisions in the marked areas to allow the anaesthetic fluid to infiltrate the area. An optical fibre with laser light is then inserted into the fat layers through a micro-cannula to melt the fat tissues, and the liquefied fat is removed through suction.

Duration

The procedure typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the number of areas being treated. Patients get to go home on the same day of surgery, as the effects of sedation only last for a few hours, thanks to twilight sedation.

Recovery

After surgery, it's normal to see some bruising and swelling, which should subside within a few days. Wear the compression garment around the clock for faster recovery, even during sleep. You should be able to return to your daily routine the day after the procedure but do wait for the doctor's approval before doing intense workouts.

Follow the post-surgery guide to facilitate a smooth and uneventful recovery. The care package should include instructions on caring for your incision stitches and when to go for regular manual lymphatic drainage massages to reduce swelling and prevent excessive scarring.

Suitable candidates

Dr Puah customises the procedure for Laserlipolysis (Laser Liposuction) to suit each individual's unique body and specific body shape. A good candidate should be in good psychological and physical health, have no underlying medical conditions, have realistic outcomes expectations, and have tried dieting and exercise but are unable to remove the stubborn fat. Women who are pregnant and those with pre-existing health conditions are unsuitable candidates for laserlipolysis (Laser Liposuction).

Results

The results you can achieve with Laserlipolysis (Laser Liposuction) are long-lasting. However, it's crucial to maintain a sensible diet and exercise regimen to prevent future weight gain and preserve these results. One remarkable aspect of this surgery is the natural process it initiates. As the laser releases heat, your skin responds by tightening and firming. This natural response reassures you of the procedure's effectiveness and the visible improvements you can expect.
